Saima: From Star Student to Community Interpreter
Employability Case Study
Programme Participant: Saima
From Star Student to Community Interpreter
Saima’s Challenge
Saima began her journey with a clear, short and long-term vocational ambition: to become a professional community interpreter. The primary obstacle she identified in her Individual Learning Plan (ILP) was an extended period of unemployment due to caring for her large family. While she had some prior experience with computers and smartphones, she was new to web browsing, productivity tools such as Microsoft Word, AI, and cybersecurity. Additionally, she had a notable lack of formal employability experience. Despite these challenges, Saima demonstrated an exceptional level of determination and a clear sense of purpose from the outset.
The Journey to Community Interpreter
Saima’s commitment to the programme was outstanding. She was the first in her cohort to complete all compulsory face-to-face and online modules and assignments including building her ATS-proof CV, AI prompt usage for refining writing, designing images and creating videos, and the Health & Wellbeing quiz well within the six-week programme timeframe, earning her certificate of completion with remarkable promptness and thoroughness.
During her one-to-one sessions, Saima received tailored support to refine her CV, highlighting how her existing translation talents and community-oriented nature were valuable transferable skills. She refined her MS Word skills with the understanding that, while she works to be an interpreter (essentially only converting spoken or signed language in real-time), being able to write things up might broadened her skills and professional horizons and help some of her target audience. The programme helped her prepare for interviews, providing guidance on how to articulate her dedication and experience. Her ambition to become a community interpreter was a central focus of this support.
Saima registered for a Level 2 Community Interpreter qualification and committed to developing additional digital skills in Microsoft Word to strengthen her employment prospects. Based on her clear passion and community involvement, we also recommended that she start volunteering while undertaking her studies, dedicating a minimum of 1 hour to community interpreting, starting with her immediate community.
The Outcome
Saima’s journey is a powerful reflection of her dedication. She was a star student, consistently demonstrating thoroughness, promptness, and an unwavering commitment to her goals. She has since been accepted onto the Community Interpreter qualification and is now actively pursuing her new career path. Her story perfectly illustrates how a targeted and supportive programme can help participants not only achieve personal milestones but also define and successfully pursue a newly shaped career trajectory, but more than anything, how a student’s commitment can help them, with the right guidance, board the train to their goals.
