MSSP Q1 2023/2024 (Quarterly update Sept to Dec 2023)
It was lovely to regroup after the summer for the first MSSP meeting of the academic year (2023/2024) on 27th September 2023. The meeting took place at Luther King House in Manchester and twenty representatives from supplementary schools attended alongside Manchester City Council representatives, Young Manchester and YPF Trust – NRCSE. During the meeting MSSP partners got to:
- network and meeting new supplementary school members to the partnership
- review the priorities and needs of supplementary school members. This review included the activity of creating a maps of Manchester that highlighted venue requirements the member schools across the city. Training needs for each school were also discussed with the partnership leads Young Manchester, MEaP and YPF- NRCSE and Manchester City Council representatives.
- discuss the governance of MSSP
- participate in an (interactive) bereavement training workshop led by guest speakers from Gaddum. The training focused on recognising the signs of bereavement and grief in children and young people and provided tools, guidance and activities to how to support them.
First Aid Training
Following the MSSP meeting on 27th September, members had requested the provision of First Aid training for their staff so this was arranged by the partnership leads. It was exciting to see forty volunteers and staff members from MSSP schools receive a First Aid Training refresher on 1st November at the Millennium Powerhouse, delivered by Cookson First Aid.
UK Defibrillator Schemes
Many participants were informed about defibrillator schemes that have been rolled out across the UK citing it was really:
“useful to find out for the first time that defibrillators are now positioned in key community hubs across communities including supermarkets, churches and youth clubs and on some streets! Our homework is to locate our nearest defibrillator”
Manchester City Centre’s defibrillator scheme was initially rolled out in the Piccadilly area of the city as part of a pilot which has now been extended to span the entire city centre including the Northern Quarter, Spinningfields, Deansgate, New Islington and Oxford Road. There are now over 120 defibrillators located across the city centre, with 25% of these accessible 24/7 to the public. 24/7 defibrillators are mainly located in city centre hotels including Doubletree By Hilton, Jury’s Inn, Hotel Gotham, Hotel Brooklyn, Hilton Manchester Deansgate, Velvet Hotel & Bar, Whitworth Locke and Macdonald Manchester Hotel as well as at Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Victoria, First Street and City Tower.
Participants learnt how to safely deliver resuscitation attempts manually also with defibrillators. They also learnt they can discover defibrillator locations using websites such as: Manchester Defibrillator Scheme – CityCo and The UK’s Leading Public Access Defib Website | HeartSafe.
The session was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants and there are plans for further First Aid session for members to take place in 2024.
Looking forward to more
