Focusing the Multi-Talented: Olu Secures Data Role at MEaP
Employability Case Study
The challenge of the multi-talented
Olusegun (aka Olu) entered the TECHWELL Bootcamp employability programme facing a common dilemma for multi-talented and highly keen-to-learn individuals. His enthusiasm for diverse subjects, ranging from data protection to artistic creativity, meant his wide-ranging capability, while valuable, was actively hindering his job search and leading to unfocused applications. The core challenge was to group and streamline this expansive learning for professional significance, dedicating his daytime career to his data protection and management skills, while confidently reserving his artistic creativity for the rest of his time. This required a critical mindset shift.
The TECHWELL Transformation
Olu joined the intensive TECHWELL Bootcamp, designed to restore and improve confidence, change mindsets, and prepare individuals for the demands of the modern workplace through its holistic approach:
1. Digital Skills: Validating Professional Focus
For Olu, the Digital pillar was essential for filling knowledge gaps and validating his career path. He completed a basic data literacy course to build foundational knowledge and, recognising his strong aptitude, was offered an extra data analyst/management course (which he is currently undergoing) to strengthen his expertise. Modules also covered topics like generative AI (with extra graphic generative AI for his artistic awareness and potential virtual assistance), cybersecurity awareness, and Microsoft Office productivity trio (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel). This strategic, intensified focus on data fluency was designed to future-proof his career and give him the tangible, cutting-edge skills needed to confidently present himself as a serious data professional.
2. Health & Wellbeing: Building Resilience and Self-Acceptance
The primary focus of the TECHWELL curriculum is mindset change and confidence boosting. The sessions helped Olu gain the resilience and self-confidence required to make a difficult choice: prioritising one set of skills for his career and compartmentalising his artistic side. Olu was able to gain the clarity to trust his decision, allowing him to concentrate his professional energy without feeling that he was sacrificing his creativity.
3. Career Development: Streamlining the Identity
This phase was pivotal. Working with his tutor, Olu’s CV was thoroughly streamlined, focusing exclusively on his profile as a data protection and data management specialist. However, acknowledging his multifaceted talents (including his amazing textile artistry), the tutor strategically guided him to nurture his creative side for his long-term vision. This involved guiding him to develop separate short artistic portfolio reels, with specific guidance to create an online exhibit via YouTube (the second largest search engine) for digital and on-demand visibility, and to explore an in-person exhibit. A comprehensive list of relevant opportunities was even provided to that end by Jonathan, one of MEaP’s talented apprentices.
The team recognised that his data fluency, combined with his creative flair, made him a “combination made in success” for areas like digital marketing, where informed, data-driven decision-making and creative execution are paramount. This unique guidance ensured his artistry was nurtured while his professional identity was strengthened. Interview preparation was then tailored specifically to handling behavioural and regulatory questions.
The Successful Outcome
Equipped with a newly focused professional identity and boosted confidence, Olu applied for a challenging and relevant opportunity: a Data Protection and Data Management Volunteer role at MEaP (the organisation running the TECHWELL programme).
The interview confirmed the efficacy of his training: he was brilliant, demonstrating deep knowledge alongside the genuine humility that he had identified as a personal strength. He was successful in securing the role, but crucially, he also received valuable constructive feedback on his performance, setting him up for continuous professional improvement. This opportunity provides crucial career-building experience in his desired field and confirms the validity of his new, focused professional direction, leveraging his data knowledge for informed decision-making within the organisation.
Conclusion
Olu’s success powerfully demonstrates the TECHWELL programme’s ability to help multitalented individuals find focus. The breadth of knowledge he now possesses – blending data analysis, creativity, and data management – positions him to become an exceptional manager soon, in a role where these skills will truly shine.

His tutor insisted that the multi-talented, especially with such a breadth of skills and the patience and humility of Olu, make for great managers. She could even easily see him founding and managing his own organisation, showcasing all his creative work and teaching others to do what he can do and more, and using his data skills to make informed decisions and secure relevant funding. The whole TECHWELL team are incredibly proud that Olu has secured this role with MEaP, showing that by changing your mindset and strategically targeting your skills, you can effectively leverage your talents to launch a fulfilling, long-term career.
