Overview
Yusra came to the TECHWELL programme as a motivated job seeker referred by Ingeus. She struggled to bridge the gap between seeking any job and finding a fulfilling, long-term career. Her initial approach, while practical, focused heavily on securing short-term patches of work. This was reflected in her CV: a generic document that didn’t truly capture her passion, her artistic affinities, her long-term professional aspirations, or her dream career.
The challenge
The TECHWELL team recognised a familiar challenge: it wasn’t a lack of motivation, but a deeper lack of confidence and self-belief. Like many of our participants, she needed a shift in mindset to focus her energy on a defined, meaningful career path. She needed to acknowledge her uniqueness and her key strengths (her gentleness, artistry, creativity, and patience). MEaP recognises that while securing short-term employment is necessary for immediate stability, it must not distract from or replace the pursuit of a defined, meaningful career path.
The TECHWELL Transformation
Yusra enrolled in MEaP’s intensive TECHWELL Bootcamp, an initiative designed to restore and improve confidence, change mindsets, and prepare individuals for the demands of the modern workplace through a holistic approach. The programme is structured around three core pillars: Health & Wellbeing, Digital, and Career development.
1. Health & Wellbeing: Building Resilience and Confidence
The primary focus of the TECHWELL curriculum is mindset change, building resilience and confidence. These are embedded throughout the programme, from the way that participants are care for, to the way all courses are taught, via the formal Health and Wellbeing course covering among others nutrition, emotional health mental health, and cultural adaptation. This critical foundation helped her to believe in her dream and embrace her long-term dream of working in childcare. The programme instilled the confidence she needed to define her goal and pursue it with conviction.
2. (Dream) Career Development: Defining a Passionate Trajectory
Working closely with our tutor and session staff, Yusra fundamentally overhauled her job search strategy. Her generic, “here I am, get me any job” CV was transformed into a dynamic document that transpired with passion for childcare, acknowledging every step she had taken towards that long-term dream, even in jobs that were seemingly irrelevant. The team also provided in-depth interview preparation, ensuring she was ready to convey her enthusiasm and skills effectively. Apprenticeships are incredibly competitive today. Securing her apprenticeship demanded the same level of preparation she would have invested in a full job application, ensuring she successfully accessed and stepped into her dream career.
3. Digital Skills: Future-Proofing and Tangible Assets
The Digital skills are strategically included to provide Yusra and all our participants with tangible, verifiable skills for her CV. Modules covered future-proofing her career in an evolving world, including basics of AI and generative AI, cybersecurity awareness, and proficiency in Microsoft Word (which incidentally also helps her to continue to improve her CV). Showcasing these digital competencies provided immediate, credible evidence of modern skillsets for employers, unlike listing soft-skill courses alone, allowing us to help her to future-proof her journey.
The Successful Outcome: Yusra embarks on her dream career
With a renewed mindset, improved confidence, a targeted CV, and interview skills, Yusra applied for an apprenticeship as a Teaching Assistant (TA) at a local nursery—a position perfectly aligned with her dream.
Her hard work, coupled with the support from the TECHWELL team, culminated in a successful interview. The nursery manager was clearly impressed, immediately following up to offer her the position of nursery apprentice. The manager specifically highlighted how impressed they were with Yusra’s energy and enthusiasm for working in childcare, confirming that the mindset shift, the CV review and interview preparation delivered by the TECHWELL programme had paid off. The offer was swiftly made.
