Celebrating Community and Culture: The 2019 MSSN Achievement Awards

On 15 June 2019, the Manchester Supplementary School Network (MSSN) held its annual Achievement Celebrations, a landmark event that has been showcasing the region’s diversity and the vital importance of community learning since 2006. Hosted at the University of Manchester, the day was a vibrant tapestry of performances, presentations, and prestigious accolades.

A Vibrant Showcase of Diversity

The celebration brought together schools from across Greater Manchester, highlighting the rich cultural heritage that defines our community. The audience was treated to an array of performances that spanned the globe, including:

Traditional Dances: A captivating traditional fan dance by the Manchester Chinese School, alongside performances from the Hua Xia and the Damascene School.

Linguistic and Cultural Presentations: Insights into the differences between Arabic and English from Al Hikmah Arabic School, and a presentation on Children’s Rights by Al Amal Arabic School.

Musical and Spiritual Recitals: Moving Quranic recitals and Hadith presentations from Alfurqan Academy, and national songs performed by the Kurdish School.

Community Spirit: Contributions from the Noor Arabic School, Al Manar Arabic School, the Bosnian School, and the Louise Da-Cocodia Trust.

A Historic Milestone for MEaP

A highlight of the afternoon was the presence of the Lord Mayor of Manchester, who attended to present awards to the dedicated students and educators.

In a historic moment for our organisation, MEaP was awarded the Manchester City Council (MCC) Higher Level Accreditation Award. We are incredibly proud to be the first supplementary school in Greater Manchester to achieve this standard. This accreditation follows the foundational work led by our Headteacher, Amber Abisai, and the coordination of the Higher Award submission by our Teacher Training mentor, Dr Ornette D Clennon.

Recognising Excellence

The awards didn’t stop there. Several of our partner schools and individuals were recognised for their outstanding contributions:

The Libyan School was celebrated as the first school in Greater Manchester to complete the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools programme.

Special mentions were given to our partners at GIFT Academy and Highway Hope for their tireless work with young people.

All participating pupils received certificates to mark their hard work and dedication throughout the academic year.

Looking Forward

The event served as a powerful reminder that the diversity of cultures in Manchester is one of our greatest strengths. As Jan Bradburn (MCC Lead for Supplementary Schools) noted, the practice demonstrated by the schools is exemplary.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Jan Bradburn, Jenny Patterson, and the entire team for their meticulous organisation of this major annual event, and to the University of Manchester for their continued support as hosts.

The MSSN Achievement Celebrations continue to be a vital platform for protecting and promoting community education, ensuring that the achievements of our young people are given the spotlight they deserve.
